FREEDOM TO DISAPPEAR

“The glacial lake of Jokulsarlon, created by a – sadly! – receding glacier, is constantly populated by icebergs calving from the glacier and swimming towards freedom in the nearby ocean. Unfortunately, as soon as they’ll reach their freedom they’ll slowly melt and disappear. While I photographed Jokulsarlon dozens of times, on this particular day the combination of those blue, whale-shaped icebergs with the warm light of sunset helped me perfectly convey the sad sense of longing for freedom of these ice giants. Moving bergs are challenging in terms of finding the perfect shutter speed to keep them sharp while smoothening the water and clouds, and in this case 8 seconds was the perfect number for me.” – Vieri
