WHERE THE GODS REST
“According to a (probably fabricated) legend, Godafoss got her name from the time when Iceland adopted Christianity as their religion, and the pagan Gods effigies where thrown in the waterfall. There are other possible origins of the name, perhaps more likely to be true; however, I like to think that the Gods are resting under the thundering waters of Godafoss, and when photographing Godafoss I envisioned creating an image telling this story. To do so, I chose to portray the falls at dusk, standing on the eastern side of the falls to photograph towards the setting sun’s last light. A long exposure helped me create a visual flow of foam in the water, like a blanket covering the resting Gods, complemented by flowing clouds above the fall. The soft and warm light of dusk, contrasting with the cold colors of the water, helped me conveying the feeling of rest – eternal.” – Vieri
